Mary Lou, daughter of Clair and Velma (Beard) Nichols was born November 3, 1938, in Sumner. She received her education in Sumner and graduated from Sumner High School in 1957. She was united in marriage with Norbert Martin Cannon on June 2, 1957, at St. Paul’s Evangelical & Reformed Church, rural Sumner. Three children were born to this union, and the family called Sumner home. In addition to motherhood, Mary Lou served as a waitress in a few diners near home and spent 16 years at Community Memorial Hospital in housekeeping and laundry. She also did some babysitting for the Reynolds’ family and spent many hours with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After retirement; and along with spending time with family, Mary Lou enjoyed watching “Days of Our Lives’, tending to her flowers, taking pictures, trying her luck at the Riverboat, long phone conversations with friends and family, and bumming with her sister. Music often filled her home and some of her favorite artists included Conway Twitty, Anne Murray, Johnny and June Carter Cash, and Alan Jackson, whom she referred to as a hunk. Ironically, she would frequently comb through the obituary announcements. When asked why she did this, she’d reply, “just making sure I’m not in there”. Mary Lou is survived by her children, Marty Cannon, Joni (Rick) Westendorf, and Jeff Cannon, all of Sumner; five grandchildren, Justin (Susi) Lampe of Westgate, Nova (Bill) Cohenour of Vinton, Nikki (Cody) Eickhoff of Plato, Missouri, Robert (Kendra) Cannon of New Hampton, and Collin Cannon of Troy Mills; thirteen great-grandchildren; three brothers, Jerry (Yvonne) Nichols of LeClair, Gail Nichols of Waverly, and David Nichols of Dike; one sister, Geneva (Robert) Van Gorder of Evansdale, and a sister-in-law, Diane Tielbur of Victory, Wisconsin. Mary Lou’s memory is also cherished by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Norbert in 2007, after fifty years of marriage; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Margaret and Robert Cannon; siblings, Betty, John, and Marvin Nichols; nephew, Scott Van Gorder; sisters-in-law, Pearl Nichols and Cherryl Nichols; brother-in-law, Richard Tielbur; and several beloved family members and friends.
