On a wrought iron cross marker in the St Joseph Cemetery, Turton S Dak, two children are listed: Alfred age 17 and Mary Louise age 7. Alfred, being older, shows up on census reports so his life is documented. He was known as Frederick, born in Illinois, died in Spink County, SD in 1893. Did they both die in 1893, perhaps from an infectious disease that affected both a little girl and a young man? The 1894 Report of the SD State Health Department reports deaths due to diptheria, scarlet fever and typhoid fever in all the neighboring counties. Spink County either didn't file, or didn't have deaths. If so, she would have been born in 1886, long after Rosalie's last baby born in 1881. Not impossible but less likely. A stronger possibility is that she was born in 1872 where there is a gap between Caroline and Frederick that suggests a lost child. She would have died about 1879 before the 1880 census and before the town was plotted in its current location in 1884. Many of the early burials on family land were moved to the town cemetery after it was established. At Alfred's death it may have been a good time to memorialize the daughter who was lost but not forgotten. It's unlikely that she was born before the move from Illinois in 1869. Another child, Hector, died in Illinois but does not appear on this marker. The baptismal records for St Joseph's Church are incomplete before 1885 and most births in those days were reported to the government decades later by adults when there was a reason to need a birth certificate. So although there is no proof, I will list her life as 1872 to 1879 so that she is remembered.
