Mary (Marie) was born on her parents' farm west of Tea, SD March 7, 1918, the fifth child of Enno and Hennina (Wheelhouse) Stratmeyer, Her mother died when she was a year old, so her father's sister's family, Wolbert and Maggie Heibult, raised her. She attended District School #86 and then moved into Chancellor with the Heibult family at age 7. She attended Chancellor Public School until she was 11 years old when she went back to her parents' home to live with her father and step-mother. She then attended Schoffelman School through 8th grade. She attended Lennox High School one year. Mary worked as a housekeeper near Lennox and in Sioux Falls prior to her marriage. On February 1, 1938 Mary was united in marriage to Donald Overgaard at her parental home by Rev. Siekmann. Following their marriage they lived on Donald's parents' farm northeast of Centerville until purchasing their own place two miles east of there where they farmed for 11 years. After the drowning death of their older son Roger on March 4, 1949, they moved back to the Overgaard family farm and continued living there most of their married life, From the late 1960s to the spring of 1990 Donald and Mary were snowbirds, spending their winter months on Ft. Myers Beach, Florida. In October of 1990 they moved into Sioux Falls and on April 15, 1991 her beloved Donald passed away. In 1992 Mary moved to Lennox where she has since lived. Mary was a long-time member of Scandia Lutheran Church in Centerville and a charter member of the Ladies Aide. She was a charter, 50 year member of the Lincoln County Friendly Fu Extension Club and was the local representative who attended the National Extension Convention in Lexington, Kentucky. She and Donald were members of the Flying Farmers & Ranchers of SD. Mary was the 1958 State Queen of the Flying Farmers during which time the SD delegation flew their own planes into New York City to represent SD at the National Convention where Mary was chosen Mrs. Congeniality. In Lennox Mary was a member of the Lennox Senior Citizens and RSVP. Mary enjoyed collecting seashells and rocks. She loved doing crafts and was a wonderful seamstress. She was an excellent cook (known for her delicious pies and desserts) and a immaculate housekeeper. Mary was a very stylish lady with special talent for color and design, Besides her husband Donald and son Chris Roger, Mary was preceded in death by her mother Hermina, her father Enno, stepmother Ella, her sister Alice E. Hill; three brothers John E, Hann and Jake E. Stratmeyer; foster parents Wolbert and Maggie Heibult; and a very special cousin "Auntie" Ann Heibult. Grateful for having shared her life are her son Odell (Dorothy) Overgaard, Centerville. Two grandsons: Chris (Karen) Overgaard, Melcher, IA and Eric (Lorraine) Overgaard, Sioux City, IA. One granddaughter: Jenny (Morgan) James, Frisco, TX. Seven greatgrandchildren: Cheyenne, Grace, Samantha, Hayden, Gabriella, and Janessa Overgaard and Marek James. Two half sisters: Engeline Linderholm, Montrose, CA and Ida Fossom, Lennox, SD; one step brother Arleigh (Sophie) Temple, Davis, SD; many other relatives and friends, including special cousins Mary Ann and Julie TerWee, Fairview, SD and close friend Dena Bruns of Lennox.
