Surviving are her husband, Vernon, Scotch Grove; a son, Robert (Mary Beth), and a daughter, Suanne (Oley) Allen, both of Cedar Rapids, 6 grandchildren, Brian James (Angela) Helgens, Kylie Helgens, James Peter Helgens, Paul Vernon Helgens, Emily Allen, and Kristin Allen; 4 great-grandchildren, Alexis, Justin, Thomas, and Joslyn; 2 sisters, Wilma (Les) Balster, Waterloo and Virginia Vernon, Mechanicsville and a sister-in-law, Eloise Helgens, Mesa, Ariz., . She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, James Gordon in 1962, 2 sisters, Lucille Kester and Lois Yount. Mary Louise Yount was born June 16, 1919 in Cass Center, Jones County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Delco and Ruth Bray, Yount. Mary Louise attended the Cass Center, Amber, and Morley Schools and graduated from the Monticello Community Schools in 1937. After school she worked for the Bell Telephone Company. Mary Louise Yount and Vernon Helgens were married on October 17, 1941 at the First Presbyterian Church. The couple farmed the Helgens Family farm before purchasing their farm in 1942. Following the death of her son Jim in 1962, Mary Louise needed a outlet for her energy and selected the American Cancer Society of Jones County. She channeled her energy there for 10 years. Mary Louise was very active in the First Presbyterian Church., serving as an Elder, a Sunday School Teacher, the Marcos Group and the Pie Committee. She also enjoyed the 94 Club and Hawkeye football and basketball. Mary Louise and Vernon did a lot of traveling in the winter months and spent the last 20 winters in the Venice, Florida area. Her beautiful smile and her wonderful sense of humor will be missed.
