Born August 24, 1924, in Dougherty, Iowa. She was one of two children born to Leo E. Geary and Cecelia R. (Dougherty) Geary. Born August 24, 1924, in Dougherty, Iowa. She was one of two children born to Leo E. Geary and Cecelia R. (Dougherty) Geary. Mary attended and graduated from Dougherty High School and furthered her education at St. Joseph Mercy Nursing School in Mason City. On March 9, 1950, Mary was united in marriage to Willard F. "Bill" Petersen in Des Moines, Iowa. The couple became the proud parents of six children. Mary was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Women's Guild in Rockwell, and the Linn Grove Country Club Women's League. As a lifelong resident in the Dougherty and Rockwell area, Mary will be well-remembered as a woman who was very caring, kind, and devoted to her faith. She took great pride in nurturing her children and grandchildren. Some of Mary's favorite leisure activities and interests included spending time with her family and friends, baking pies, golfing and solving crossword puzzles. Mary will be missed dearly by her family and friends who have shared in her life. Preceding Mary in death were her husband, Willard "Bill" Petersen in 1991; her parents, Leo and Cecelia (Dougherty) Geary; and two nieces. Mrs. Petersen was survived by her children, Gregory Petersen and his wife, Teri, of Mason City; Gary Petersen and his wife, Patti, of Rockwell; Rondi Staley and her husband, Carroll, of Cypress, Texas; Daina Pitzenberger and her husband, Ron, of Tomball, Texas; Beth Schmitt and her husband, Leroy, of Rockwell; and Dennis Petersen and his wife, Joni, of Aitkin, Minn. Mary will also be sadly missed by her brother, Dick Geary, and his wife, Ruthie, of Mason City; 19 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Visitation was June 4th at the Sacred Heart Catholic School Chapel in Rockwell. A rosary was recited and a Scripture service followed. Visitation was also one hour prior to Funeral services, which were June 5th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on 305 East Elm Street in Rockwell, with the Reverend Craig E. Steimel officiating. Interment followed in Rockwell Cemetery.
