Description	:	Mary M. Whitney Schany, was born on February 20, 1925, in Emmetsburg, Iowa, the daughter of Wilbur and Mary (McCormick) Price. She grew up in Emmetsburg and for a few years in Graettinger. She attended St. Mary’s Academy where she completed grade school and then attended Emmetsburg High School, graduating in 1942. She grew up in Emmetsburg and for a few years in Graettinger. She attended St. Mary’s Academy where she completed grade school and then attended Emmetsburg High School, graduating in 1942. Mary had a pretty voice and therefore was active in school musicals, programs, and was much in demand as a soloist. Following high school Mary worked at National Cash Store for a year and a half. On February 16, 1944, Mary married Robert J. Whitney in Emmetsburg. They were the parents of four children. Bob and Mary farmed south of Cylinder for one year before moving to a farm north of Emmetsburg on River Road. Being a city girl, she knew nothing about farming, but it didn’t take her long to learn. She was soon driving tractor, and she loved doing field work, raising chickens and pigs. She walked beans and even learned to milk cows. In 1955 Bob and Mary bought a farm in Cylinder and moved there. Besides farming they also had an excellent herd of Holstein dairy cattle. In August, 1969 Mary was employed by the Emmetsburg School System as a secretary, a position she held for twenty one years until her retirement in 1990. She also served as City Clerk in Cylinder for twenty one years. Bob died on October 18, 1993. On November 25, 2004, Mary married her long-time friend, William P. Schany in Emmetsburg. They farmed together, getting ground ready for planting in the spring and in the fall, Mary drove the grain cart and Bill drove a truck, hauling the grain. Their field work stopped when Bill had a heart attack in 2010. Mary was a devoted and faithful member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. While living near Ayrshire Mary became a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Mary died on Monday, November 30, 2020, at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, Iowa, at the age of 95. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilbur and Mary Ann Price; her first husband, Robert “Bob” Whitney; her second husband, William “Bill” Schany; and son-in-law, Phil Gunther. She is survived by her children, Sharon (Tom) Storey of Red Oak, Iowa, Judy Gunther of Fairmont, Minnesota, Bill (Bonnie) Whitney of Emmetsburg, Iowa, and Barbara (Paul) Thoreson of Swea City, Iowa; sixteen grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
