Obituary From “Ottumwa Courier,” September 20, 1947: Dies While On Visit To Son’s Home Mrs. Mayme Carroll, 1205 West Highland avenue, died Friday night at a hospital in Cedar Rapids, where she had gone to visit her son, Michael. She was born in Eddyville in 1885, the daughter of Henry and Mary Burns. She came to Ottumwa with her parents in 1909 and has since resided here. She was married in 1911 to Martin L. Carroll, who died in 1918. One son, Edward, was killed in France during World War II. Survivors include three sons, Michael, of Cedar Rapids and Leonard and Martin of Ottumwa; one sister, Mrs. W.J. Clark of Ottumwa; four brothers, Bernard Burns of Omaha, Edward Burns of Cedar Rapids, Leonard Burns of Aurora, Ill., and Robert Burns of Chicago. She was a member of St. Mary’s parish, the Altar and Rosary society, the auxiliary of the brotherhood of Railway Trainmen, the American Legion auxiliary Gold Star mothers. The body will be brought to the Traul funeral chapel Sunday at 1 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. at Traul’s and at 9 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic church where a requiem high mass will be celebrated by the Rt. Rev. Magr. J. M. Walsh, V.F. Burial will be in the Calvary cemetery. Members of St. Mary’s parish, the Altar and Rosary society, and General Shields council, No. 888 of the Knights of Columbus will meet at the Traul chapel Monday evening at 8 o’clock to recite the rosary. “CARROLL SERVICES,” From “Ottumwa Courier,” September 22, 1947: Funeral services for Mrs. Mayme Carroll, 61, Ottumwa, who died last Friday night at Cedar Rapids, will be at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Traul funeral chapel and at 9 o’clock at St. Mary’s Catholic church. Pallbearers will be Leo Bremhorst, William Wilson, Edward Wilson, Joe Lennon, A.J. Schwartz and Charles Lunkley. Members of General Shields council, No. 888, Knights of Columbus, the Altar and Rosary society, and of St. Mary’s parish will meet at 8 o’clock tonight at the Traul chapel to recite the rosary.
