First to Simeon Poland on October 29, 1856 in Maryland. They moved to Iowa soon after their marriage where their two children were born. Simeon volunteered to serve in the Civil War, Iowa Company I, 13th regiment. He was injured at the Battle of Shiloh and died of his wounds at Saint Louis on April 26, 1862. Second, she married Otha Wilson Jr on January 4, 1866 at Washington County, Iowa ——————— Death of Mrs. Otho Wilson On last Sunday morning the death angel came to the aged Mrs Otho Wilson, and gently called her to rest. For a long time, more than a year, the sturdy vitality of this splendid woman has fought a losing fight with the ravages of disease and infirmities of old age, but thru it all she was patient, firmly convinced she was receiving the best of care and resigned to the end when it should come. Since the death of her husband which occured several years ago, she has lived with her daughter, Mrs George Whetstine, where she has received every possible attention. But medical skill nor devoted nursing cannot always stay the Grim Reaper. Mrs Wilson was a lady highly spoken of by all who knew her. She was a great home lover and devoted herself chiefly to those dear ones within the home circle, altho she ever found time to be a helpful neighbor and freind. Her children should rejoice that they were privileged to enjoy a mother's companionship and love far beyond the average limit of years, but these tender ties are all the harder to break when they have been strengthed by years. The funeral services were held at the Whetstine residence Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev W B Moore, and interment was made in the Taylor cemetery beside loved ones. The following obituary gives briefly her life history: Mary Magadalene Sigler, daughter of Rev John J and Eliza Potter Sigler, was born in Westernport, Alleghany County, Maryland, March 23, 1838, and died at the home of her eldest daughter, Mrs Ida Whetstine, April 15, 1923, aged 85 years and 22 days. She was married October 29, 1856, in her home state, to Simeon Poland, then came to Iowa to make their home. Two children were born to this union, John Lewis, born July 29, 1857, died Aug 1, 1883; and Ida Leona, born July 22, 1860, now the wife of George Whetstine. Simeon Poland enlisted inthe service in Co. I 13th regiment, at the beginning of the Civil War, and served till his death in the battle of Shiloh, April 1862. On the 4th of January, 1866, she was again married at Washington Iowa, to Otho Wilson, To this Union six children were born, Elizabeth May, born Oct 26, 1866, and died Nov 20, 1876; Mary June, born June 27, 1869, now wife of Howard B Gardner; Edith Frances, born May 6, 1871, now wife of O J Cullember; George Berton, born July 29, 1872, and died Nov 12 1876; Elmer Otho, born July 26, 1875; Lida Idell, born Dec 27, 1876, now the wife of A H Freel. All the children reside near Wellman except Mrs Cullember, who lives at Mt. Vernon, IA. Besides these children, two sisters, Mrs Elizabeth Stephens and Miss Mattie Sigler; 2 half sisters, Mrs Anna Evans and Mrs Eliza Johnson; 3 half brothers, Welsh W Sigler, Miller Sigler and Godfrey Sigler, also 14 grand children and 6 great grand children are left to mourn her departure. Being raised in a christian home, she has always lived in that faith. She was a member of the United Brethren church, and was always more than free to give to every church worker that came to her, soliciting means to carry on the work. — Wellman Advance, Wellman, Iowa, Thursday, April 19, 1923, page one
