Hauser, widow of John H. Hauser, Jr., and a real pioneer of the county, died at the home of her son, L. W. Hauser, in the Bethel Grove neighborhood, Liscomb township, at midnight Friday. Mrs. Hauser's death was not unexpected, as he had been failing rapidly ever since her accident. Only two years after the first white settler came to Marshall county, one year after the Coopers settled Timber Creek grove, and two years before Henry Anson landed in Marshalltown to cast his lot for better or worse, John H. Hauser, Jr., and his bride of a year reached Marshall county, and entered a claim on the Iowa river, three and one-half miles southwest of where the town of Liscomb is now situated. On this same farm they lived together for almost sixty-one years, or until Mr. Hauser's death, on April 11, 1910. CAME TO COUNTY IN 1849 It was in the fall of 1849 that John H. Hauser, Jr., and his young wife reached Marshall county from Owen county, Indiana. The county was then the virgin prairie, and the timber of the river was sought as advantageous both for protection from the wintry blasts and for fuel. The trip from Indiana was made overland, and because of the lack of civilization in the then "far west" the Hausers drove their won milch cows. Out of the native timber along the river Mr. Hauser hewed the logs that entered into the construction of his log cabin. Wolves howled the night long around the lonely home. Bands of roving Indians were engaged in trapping along the river, harmless enough, altho the pioneer settlers were never very sure when they were not to be feared. Deer and wild turkey were plentiful. Prairie chickens were also abundant, so there was no lack of fresh meat for this new family, whose larder was kept filled with the choicest of wild game, shot from the cabin door. In this log cabin that Mr. Hauser built the family lived until 1857, when a new brick residence was erected and continued to be the home until Mr. Hauser's death, when his widow became a member of her son's household. WAS NATIVE OF INDIANA Mary Arney, who became Mrs. Hauser was a native of Owen county, Indiana, where she was born April 2, 1829. Her marriage to Mr. Hauser was celebrated in Owen county Feb. 4, 1848. Mr. and Mrs. Hauser became the parents of ten children, six of whom are living. They are George Hauser, who lives just south of the old home place, and on the same farm; Mrs. Eliza Whitacre, of this city; Mrs. Sarah A. Beeson, of Independence; Mrs. W. H. Robilliard, of Faribault, Minn.; L. W. Hauser, who lives on the old homestead; and Mrs. Alfred Brown, of West Liberty. The children who are dead are William, Wiley, Caroline and Luella. There also survive Mrs. Hauser fifteen grandchildren and several great grandchildren. One of the grandsons is Joseph A. Whitacre, of this city. FUNERAL SUNDAY AFTERNOON Mrs. Hauser, with her late husband, was one of the organizers of the New Bethel Christian church, now designated as the Church of Christ, which is situated in the same neighborhood where the Hausers have for 63 years lived. From this church the funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, and interment will follow in the Bethel cemetery, beside the body of her husband, in the Hauser family lot. Rev. G. E. Roberts, of Des Moines, will have charge of the services.
