Mary O'Connor was the second of thirteen children born to Theresa and John Fitzgerald on August 14, 1921 at their modest farm home south of Beresford, SD. She spent her entire childhood on the family farm and attended school in the Beresford area. After graduation from High School in 1939, she worked for two years before marrying the love of her life, Gratton (Irish) O'Connor on June 18, 1941. After WWII, Irish and Mary moved to Sioux Falls where they raised seven children - Tom (Bev) O'Connor in Kansas City, Jan (Russ) Evenson in San Antonio, TX, Dave (Peggy) O'Connor in Abilene, TX, Susan (Keith) O'Connor-Bowars in Wichita, KS, Mark (Jane) O'Connor in Sioux Falls, Bob (Karla) O'Connor in Sioux Falls, Mike (Janice) O'Connor in Sioux Falls. In 1970, Mary and Irish co-founded the O'Connor Group and were the only two employees. Today, the company has grown into a major supplier of commercial HVAC equipment and control systems with three locations and 110 employees. Throughout most of her life, Mary's primary focus was raising her large family, being of service to others and the Catholic Church, where she devoted most of her spare time through the Catholic Daughters, Altar Guild and Christ the King choir. Irish and Mary's favorite ways to spend a night out included dancing to jazz and dinner parties. Mary was a feared opponent and much sought after partner in many card games including Bridge, pitch, rummy, poker and others. For the past twenty years Mary lived in Mesa, AZ during the winter months where she made many wonderful friends and enjoyed her retirement. She also attended Christ the King Church in Mesa, AZ. Preceding her in death are her parents (John and Theresa Fitzgerald), brothers Edmund and Leo Fitzgerald, sisters Marcella and Delia, husband of 58 years Irish (1999), and sons Ted ('45), Greg (‘58) and Jerry ('72). Celebrating her life are the surviving seven children, twenty grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian burial will begin 10:00 am Friday at Christ the King Catholic Church. Interment will be in St. Michael Cemetery. A Rosary will begin at 6:30 pm Thursday, with a Wake Service following at 7:00 pm at Christ The King Church. Miller Funeral Home 507 S.
