Mary died September 2, 2011 at the Ashley Nursing Home. Mary M. Retzer, daughter of Christian and Fredericka (Hoffman) Jr. was born May 2, 1912 on the family homestead southwest of Ashley. She attended country school and helped on the family farm. She worked in Ashley at Schrenk's Grocery Store for several years. She was united in marriage to Charles Meyer on May 12, 1943 at Ashley. They owned the Ash Theatre for a number of years. They also purchased Meyer's Confectionary Store. They retired in 1964. Her husband died on November 26, 1988. Mary did quilting at the church and volunteered for many different jobs at church. She enjoyed playing cards, dancing waltzes and polkas. She liked to sing with any group such at the Joyful Singers. Spending time with family and friends is what she thoroughly loved the most. Mary was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, American Legion Auxiliary, Joyful Singers and the Ashley Medical Center Auxiliary. Mary is survived by her daughter, Diana (Warren) LaVoi of Detroit Lakes, MN, one sister, Esther Erlenbusch of Ashley, one sister-in-law, Hilda Retzer of Ashley, three grandchildren, Lisa LaVoi, Nathan (Kate) LaVoi and Sarah (Andy) Leapaldt, one step-grandchild, Marcus (Chandra) LaVoi, two great-grandchildren, Isabella LaVoi and Connor Leapaldt and one step-grandchild, Jerico LaVoi. Her parents, husband, three infant sisters, one sister, Anna Maier and two brothers, Julius Retzer and Walter Retzer preceded her in death. Casketbearers will be Ken Retzer, Glenn Retzer, Rick Oberlander, Andrea Wike, Steve Retzer and Whitney Retzer. The organist will be Steve Glaesmann and the soloist is Lana Christmann. Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley has been entrusted with arrangements.
