Mary's death record also shows that she was 41 years, 3 months, and 6 days old when she died, and using the August 25, 1900 death date to calculate her birthday, that would make her date of birth May 19, 1859. The on-line death record simply shows her date of birth as 1859. Her obituary gives her age at death as 43 years, 7 months, and 25 days. Using these figures, her birth date calculates to be January 1, 1857. In the 1860 Census for Henry County, Iowa, Mary was shown as age 3, born in 1857. I have used the January 1, 1857, birth date on this memorial, as I think it is probably the accurate one. If a family member comes across this and has information verifying that Mary's date of birth is otherwise, please let me know. --------------- Obituary From Ottumwa Courier, Tuesday, August 28, 1900: Mary, the wife of Henry H. Eslinger, died at 5:45 o'clock Sunday morning, August 26, aged 43 years, 7 months and 25 days. The deceased has been a resident of this city for about thirty years and has a large circle of friends who, besides her husband and four children, are left to mourn their loss. The funeral was held this morning at 10 o'clock, from the late residence of the deceased, 506 Clinton avenue. The remains were taken to Point Isabelle cemetery for interment.
