Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Reiff Funeral Home, Independence, where the rosary will be recited at * p.m. and a parish vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. She was born on June 12, 1918, in Masonville, daughter of Lewis and Rose (McGraw) McElroy. She graduated from the Prairie High School in Lamont and received her teaching certificate from Mt. Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, in 1938. She started teaching in a one room school house while she continued to work toward her degree in education which she earned from the University of Upper Iowa in Fayette. In the mid 1950's, she began teaching at Brandon Public School, Brandon, Iowa, until coming to St. John Catholic Schools in Independence in the mid 1960's, teaching until her retirement in 1985. Marguerite married Edward C. Bagby in Masonville, on June 12, 1940. The couple made their home in Independence where they raised their family. Marguerite was a devout member of St. John's Catholic Church, a Eucharistic Minister, and served on many church committees. She was a member of the St. John's Rosary Society and the Catholic Daughters of America. She volunteered at the church, school and at the Buchanan County Health Center. She received the Governor's Volunteer Award in 1988, and the Independence Chamber of Commerce Religious Volunteer Award in 2000. Marguerite will be most remembered walking to daily mass every day until becoming physically unable to do so. Surviving are her children, Larry (Irene) Bagby, of Fairfax, Va., Don (Diana) Bagby, of Dubuque, Ron (Kathy) Bagby, of Omaha, Neb., Dr. Martin (fiance, Sheila Moore) Bagby, of Dubuque, Dennis Bagby, of Dallas, Texas, Ken (Donna) Bagby, of Independence, and Kevin (Mary) Bagby, of Manchester; 17 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rose (McGraw) and Lewis McElroy; her husband, Edward J. Bagby, in 1993; a son, Eddie Bagby; a daughter, Marilyn Wetzel; a great-grandson, Scottie Foland; and two brothers, Francis and John McElroy.
