Mr. Mason saw the wheel as it struck the ground and also that it had entirely missed the children. He then naturally turned his attention to his work. Just then, Mary, aged eight years, said she felt dizzy and her father sprang forward as she fell, catching her in his arms. He bore her into the house where she opened her eyes, gave one convulsive gasp and died. Her demise can only be accounted for on the hypothesis that the running off of the wagon wheel caused a fright that resulted in death. The bereaved father and mother have the sympathies of a numerous circle of friends in their sudden and sad affliction. —Lake Democrat St. Helena Star, October 4, 1878 -------------------------------------------------- A. very singular accident occurred at the residence of Albert Mason, near Upper Lake recently, resulting in the death of one of Mr. Mason's children. Mr. Mason had been greasing a wagon, and had put on one of the wheels without putting on the tap. While going round to the other side of the wagon, the children began to turn the wheel, and it came off and fell down. Hearing some noise, Mr. Mason ran back and asked if any of them were hurt; all answered no, but in a few moments a little girl of eight years began to complain of dizziness. Mr. Mason started to carry her to the house, but she died in his arms before reaching there. No mark or bruise of any kind could be found upon her person.
