Mary Maxine Sloan, daughter of Robert and Jessie Disbrow Sloan, was born at Keosauqua, Iowa, July 10, 1905, and died at Ames, Iowa, March 8, 1922, at the age of sixteen years. While still a baby, her parents moved to Douds-Leando, and from there to Ottumwa, where school days were begun. A business opening took the family from Ottumwa to Ames when Mary was ten years age. Mary Maxine Sloan, daughter of Robert and Jessie Disbrow Sloan, was born at Keosauqua, Iowa, July 10, 1905, and died at Ames, Iowa, March 8, 1922, at the age of sixteen years. While still a baby, her parents moved to Douds-Leando, and from there to Ottumwa, where school days were begun. A business opening took the family from Ottumwa to Ames when Mary was ten years age. The tender graces of the child had developed into the winning ways of a young girl who possessed that rare gift of gay, undaunted laugh for every occasion. With her ready smile she was known at school as "Sunshine Mary". An ardent Campfire girl, the spirit of the symbol "Wohelo" shone in her every day service. But of the "work, health and love", health finally failed her. She gradually withdrew from the busy life of the High School girl, and during the last two weeks before her death, she suffered much from acute Bright's disease, which had laid its dread touch on her. On Sunday her condition became alarming, and she grew steadily worse 'til Tuesday night, when she went singing out of life as she had gone singing through it. The deep grief of those to whom she was dearest is shared by all those whose lives she had touched with her generous good nature. "Could these with us remain, how different were life beneath our sun." She was brought back to her "beloved Keosauqua", and was laid to rest in Purdom cemetery on Friday afternoon, March 10.
