Mary Dunlavy, wife of T. J. Dunlavy, was born February 26, 1836 in Putman county, Indiana. Departed this life December 2, 1900, aged 65 years, 9 months and 6 days. She was united in marriage to T. J. Dunlavy at the residence of M. downing in Salt Creek township, Davis county, Iowa, February 9, 1870. As a result of this union one son, Asbury Dunlavy was born unto them. Some years prior to this, however, she was married to a man by the name of Pitcher, and as a result of this union one son also was born unto them. Both these boys have grown to the years of manhood, and were present at the funeral. She was sick 18 months, suffering severely at times, but bore her sufferings patiently and without murmuring . She never publicly confessed Christ, yet, she was hopeful. She was a firm believer in the bible, and the Christ of the bible. She came as near living up to the Golden Rule as many of us perhaps, who have our names enrolled upon the church record. It is one thing to have our names enrolled upon the church record, but it is another and different thing to live the life of the righteous. Mary Dunlavy whose maiden name was Swift, was a good woman, a good citizen, a good neighbor, a loving companion, a gentle mother, attended strictly to her own business and did not meddle with the affairs of her neighbors. She was at peace with all mankind, and at peace with God. During the last hours of her life she sang as best she could, some of the songs of Zion. The funeral services were conducted December 3, 1900, at the family residence by Rev. L. C. Carroll and the writer after which the remains were followed by a goodly number of the friends of the family to the South cemetery where the body by loving hands was carefully and tenderly laid away to rest till the resurrection morn. Sister, thou wast mild and lovely, Gentle as the summer breeze; Pleasant as the air of evening, When it floats among the trees.
