Description	:	Mary McLaughlin was from Altavra, Parish of Killarga (modern spelling), County Leitrim, Ireland, born approximately 1820-1823. Her parents were John McLaughlin and Barbara McKernan. She married Owen Gaffney in Ireland and they left Ireland immediately after the Great Hunger. Owen and Mary Gaffany arrived in New York from Sligo aboard the "Dromahair" on April 26, 1850. Owen was listed on the passenger manifest as age 38; Mary was 28. With them were their three children: Ann (5), Catherine (3), and Mary (infant). She married Owen Gaffney in Ireland and they left Ireland immediately after the Great Hunger. Owen and Mary Gaffany arrived in New York from Sligo aboard the "Dromahair" on April 26, 1850. Owen was listed on the passenger manifest as age 38; Mary was 28. With them were their three children: Ann (5), Catherine (3), and Mary (infant). Per the Famine Irish Passenger Records Data File at NARA, infant Mary was born at sea. Some of Mary's other relatives were aboard, as well, including her mother, Barbara McLoughlin, age 50. [The Dromahair was a barque built in New Brunswick in 1841. It apparently was designed to carry cargo from Canada or New York to Sligo but would carry passengers from Sligo to America as a way to avoid a profitless trip. A few years after the voyage of the Gaffneys and McLoughlins, the Dromohair was carrying timber out of Quebec when it foundered in a gale on December 19, 1858. Some of the crew died of starvation; the rest were rescued by a passing ship on January 8, 1859. It sank on about January 9, 1859.] In 1850, the family lived in Middlebury, Addison County, Vermont where the census lists Owen as "O. Garfany.” Owen is listed as age 30, and Mary as 27. Other members of Mary's McLaughlin family lived nearby in Middlebury in the household of her brother John, including her mother Barbara. In 1857, Owen Gaffeney and family were listed in the St. Bridget's Parish census (Rutland, Vermont). Mary and Owen are both listed as age 35. In 1860, Owen Goffen or Goffne (hard to read) is listed in the census in Rutland, Rutland County. Owen seems to be listed as age 49; Mary is 39. Among Mary's siblings in Vermont (and there were probably more) were: Patrick McLaughlin (married Bridget O'Rourke) John McLaughlin (married Mary Stewart) Alice McLaughlin (married Brian McTierney) Catherine McLaughlin (married Patrick Dyer) Ellen McLaughlin (married Thomas Rooney) Mary's mother, Barbara McLaughlin, died in 1872 and is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Rutland. Mary predeceased her mother, dying in 1863. Her gravestone and a vital records index card list her as Mary Gaphney, date of death October 12, 1863 and age 43. However, the microfilm "Vermont Deaths and Burials" lists the death of "Mrs. Gaffeney" in Rutland on June 8, 1863, age 40, born in Ireland, died of consumption. Her gravestone is inscribed with the alternate spelling "Gaphney." Mary Gaffney's children included: Ann, who died young; Catherine, later Mrs. Michael Capeless; Mary, later Mrs. Patrick Rooney; John, who died young; Ellen, later Mrs. Edward McGinley, then Mrs. Patrick Mumford; Barbara, later Mrs. Miles/Myles Walsh/Welsh/Welch; Margaret, later Mrs. Francis McMurray; Bridget, later Mrs. Miles/Myles Walsh/Welsh/Welch, following the death of her sister Barbara; James, probably died young; Rose, who died young.
