Mary Olivia, daughter of Horace H. and Sophia SMITH, was born in Powells Valley near Fincastle, Tenn. December 30, 1876. She lived in the beautiful valley practically all her life. She observed the beauty... Read More	The following obituary was obtained from The Campbell Countian, Vol. 20, No.4: "Obituary." Mrs. Mary Smith Russell. Mary Olivia, daughter of Horace H. and Sophia SMITH, was born in Powells Valley near Fincastle, Tenn. December 30, 1876. She lived in the beautiful valley practically all her life. Her life, like the life of "Earnest" in Nathaniel HAWTHORNE's story, "The Great Stone Face," was greatly enriched by the Christian atmosphere of her childhood home, the splendid character of the people of the community and the beautiful valley that God has so richly blessed. She observed the beauty of the flowers, the lovely valley and mountain scenes and the acts and deeds of kindness of those with whom she lived. Her thoughts and meditation upon those things unconsciously became a part of her lovely character, and made her tender, gracious and beautiful in her life and service to others. She was continuously doing things that would help her friends, her pastor and her neighbors to enjoy life more. She was converted and joined the M.E. Church, South in her early "teens" and has been a faithful member of this church all her life. On April 3rd, 1899 she married Chas. Alexander RUSSELL with whom she lived until his death. This marriage was blessed by a daughter who has been trained into a lovely christian young woman. Through the sacrifice an economy of Mrs. RUSSELL, she lived to see her daughter, Lyllian finish Peabody College this past year. It was also her privilege to give in marriage her daughter to Mr. Vining DEAKINS, a man of fine christian character. Mrs. RUSSELL was making her home with her daughter at the time of her departure. It brought much sorrow to the hearts of her relatives and the host of friends at LaFollette when the news came that Mrs. RUSSELL had received a stroke of paralysis on Wednesday, September the 3rd. The sickness proved fatal and on Saturday at 4 p.m. September the 6th she passed to her reward from the home of her daughter at South Pittsburg, Tenn. The outstanding things of her life was her christian faith, the development of lovely christian character in her daughter "to carry on", and the fact that she cared for others. Her body was brought to the home of her sister, Mrs. R. H. SHARP on Sunday. After a funeral service in the LaFollette Church Monday at ten o'clock, conducted by Rev. J.L. MULLINS, her body was laid to rest beside her father and mother at Fincastley. [The LaFollette Press, Thursday, 18 September, 1930.]
