Read More	Daughter of Paul Anthony Letcher and his wife Thelma Celestia Bliss (of Buchanan, Niles, Bertrand, North of Vandalia, Jones, and Three Rivers, Michigan). ------------------------------------ Mary was born in the home of her Grandparents Alois and Alice Letcher at 3575 West Bertrand Road, South of Buchanan, in Bertrand Township, Berrien County Michigan (in an upstairs bedroom). The mailing address given on her birth certificate is listed as R.F.D. # 4, South Bend, Indiana (but it was actually in Berrien County Michigan). Note: This home was about 1/4 mile North of the Michigan-Indiana State line, and at that time it had a South Bend, Indiana mailing address (even though it was located South of Buchanan, in Berrien County Michigan). It now has a Niles, MI mailing address. -------------------------------------- Mary had polio as a very young child (while she and her parents were living with her Grandparents). ------------------------------------ Note: Her Grandmother Alice Letcher always called her "Pauline". -------------------------------------- Mary first attended grade school near Buchanan, Michigan (from about 1941 to 1945). Her father's cousin Grace Letcher, who was a school teacher, would pick her up and give her a ride to school. ------------------------------------ In 1945, when Mary was 9 years of age, her parents bought a farm North of Vandalia, in Sections 22 and 23 of Penn township, Cass county Michigan. Mary then attended the (one room) White Temple Grade School, North of Vandalia, Michigan. Mary graduated from the Cassopolis High School, in Cassopolis Michigan in 1954, where she was in the Choir in her 10th year, and she was on the girls basketball team her 11th and 12th year. She then attended a business school in Omaha, Nebraska. ------------------------------------- As a teenager, Mary was a member of the White Temple 4-H Club. She had a western riding horse named "Chita" (Senorita Conchita), that she entered at the Cass County Fair each year (and won numerous ribbons with). --- When friends and relatives would come to visit on the farm, Mary was always asked to get her horse out, and show them all the tricks that she had taught her horse to do. -------------------------------------- As a youngster, she was a big fan of the Western cowboy movie and television stars, such as Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans (who were very popular at that time). Her parents took their children to see these western stars in person, when they were on tour. ----- When Mary and her siblings were children, her parents would occasionally take them to visit their widowed Grandmothers in Buchanan, MI. On a Sunday afternoon they would first visit their maternal Grandmother Cecile Bliss at 119 South Cayuga St. in Buchanan. They would then drive out to their paternal Grandmother's home, Alice Letcher, at 3575 West Bertrand Road, South of Buchanan. They would get to their Grandmother Alice Letcher's home in time to watch the Gene Autry and the Roy Rogers western shows on her television (before Mary's family had a T.V.). Grandma Letcher would serve them vanilla ice cream and wafer cookies to eat as they watched the popular western T.V. shows the children loved. ---------------------------------- After business school, Mary worked in the office at the Bendix Corporation in South Bend, Idiana. -------------------------------------- Mary purchased a home on Hospital Road, on the South side of Cassopolis, MI (when she was still a single woman). -------------------------------------- Mary was married on Oct. 19, 1962, to Jack Evan Toney. Jack worked as a bookkeeper in Cassopolis, Michigan. (Jack was born Oct. 18, 1926, and he died Oct. 10, 1997). Jack is the son of Evan Scott Toney and his wife Gladys Irene Momony, who are buried in the (South) Union Cemetery, North of Niles, on the S.W. corner of M-140 and Pokagon Road, in Berrien township, Berrien County Michigan. (There are 28 people with the surname of "Toney" buried in that cemetery, covering several generations of the Toney family). Jack and Mary were married in the "Penn Friends Church", in Penn, Cass County Michigan, (on the corner of Quaker St. and Penn Road), by Rev. Clayton Hiatt. Jack and Mary Toney had one daughter. Jack and Mary Toney were later divorced. Mary then went back to using her maiden name. ------------------------------------ As an adult, Mary lived South of Cassopolis, in Three Rivers, and near Mendon, Michigan. ------------------------------------ In her later years, Mary had a pet cat named "Goldie", which she adored. ------------------------------------ Mary died on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, in the "Riverview Manor Nursing Home", at 55378 Wilbur Road, (North of) Three Rivers, St. Joseph County Michigan, where she had been living for the last 14 months (since June 26, 2008). Mary died at the age of 73 years, 5 months, and 17 days. ----------------------------------- Mary's funeral was held in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Buchanan, MI, with Pastor Ward Pierce, of the West Mendon Methodist Church officiating. ------------------------------ Mary's remains and headstone are located in Section B, Lot 82, near her parents, in the Oak Ridge Cemetery in Buchanan, Michigan.
