Seeley and wife will leave next week for a six-months’ trip to Iowa, New York, Canada and other Eastern points, visiting relatives and old familiar spots. Mr. Seeley is an old pioneer of California and this is his first trip East since coming here. He was a pioneer in Iowa, when that State was a territory, and when he returns, the old landmarks of youthful remembrance will have long since been effaced. The Courier joins with hosts of friends in wishing Mr. Seeley and his estimable wife a pleasant trip and safe return to San Bernardino. Mary's husband, David Seeley, died on May 24, 1892. The Los Angeles Herald (Los Angeles, CA.), P. 13, Col. 2 Sat., Oct. 22, 1910 PIONEER TREES OF SAN BERNARDINO GET THE AX First Peppers from Sandwich Islands Removed SAN BERNARDINO, Oct. 21 - After having withstood the blasts of over half a hundred winters, two pioneer pepper trees of the San Bernardino valley are being felled because they have become so infirm that they may be uprooted at any time, to the damage of nearby homes. The two trees were the first of the pepper variety to be planted in the valley and were the first to be brought to California. They were imported from the Sandwich Islands and planted in this city by Mrs. Mary P. Seeley in 1856. (Sandwich Islands was the name given to the Hawaiian Islands by James Cook in 1778.) The children of three generations have played beneath the stately and stalwart old trees, which stood at the corner of Sixth street and Arrowhead avenue (where Mrs. Seeley lived). The ax of the woodman has spared them for several years, but public safety finally demanded that the pioneers of all pepper trees in this valley be felled. Seeley and other relatives here, left yesterday for San Francisco, where she will meet Montana friends, and sail on Saturday for Honolulu, on a pleasure trip to the Hawaiian Islands. Mrs. Corbett was born in San Bernardino, her parents being pioneers of the valley, and Mrs. Seeley on Sunday celebrated her eighty-ninth birthday. Seeley, who has resided here for fifty-seven years, being one of the really original settlers of the valley, died at her home at the northwest corner of Arrowhead avenue and Sixth street this morning at the advanced age of 89 years. She is survived by four children; Mrs. Mary A. McDonald of Los Angeles, D. R. Seeley of Highland, Mrs. J. H. Barton of san Bernardino and Mrs. Isabelle Corbett of Butte, Mont. Duckworth yesterday filed a petition for letters of administration, the petitioner being a son of the deceased, D. R. Seeley. The estate is valued at $2,200. The heirs at law include, beside the son, Mary A.McDonald, Caroline Barton and M. I. Corbett.
