Surrounded by her sons and daughters, who had been tearfully waiting for the spirit to take its flight for many weary days and nights, she passed away as calmy and peacefully as a child goes to sleep. Mary Ennis Vance was born in Green County, Ohio, December 28, 1806 - Died February 27, 1895, lacking one day of being 88 years and two months of age. She was married to Col. James Vance in 1831. The came west in 1842 and the following year settled in Mahaska County two miles north of Eddyville, where they continued to reside for many years, rearing a family of three sons and two daughters, all of whom survive her. Mrs. Elmira Brubaker, of Marion County; Bradley Vance, of Warren County; Mrs. Louisa Rouse, of Jasper County; James E. Vance, of Mahaska County, and Z . T. Vance, of this city; all of whom have been present during her last illness, tenderly administering to and cheering her in her last moments on earth. She possessed a sweet and gentle spirit, a happy and cheerful disposition and was beloved by all who knew her. Conscious of her near departure she expressed her readiness and willingness to go.
