The Late Polly Kiger There departed this life, near Royalton, in this county, but a few days ago, a very aged woman, Mrs. Polly Kiger, who must have reached the age of at least 110 years! The writer knew Mrs. Kiger well - was a little boy play-mate of her youngest child George, who is now a most respectable old gentleman of 66 years of age, living on his fine plantation, near Cedar Hill, in this county. Mrs. Kiger had no record of the date of her birth, but claimed to be considerably over 100 years old. I can confirm her claim as to this. She and my mother were intimate friends. I can remember when they interchanged visits, and remember as well that my mother was a much younger woman than Mrs. Kiger; yet if my mother were alive now, she would be 100 years old. I have often been told by Mrs. Kiger that she was a young woman out at service at the time of the "Whiskey Rebellion" in Pennsylvania, which occurred in 1794 - 90 years ago! Suppose she was then 20 years old, that would make her age, at death, 110 years. She has repeatedly told me that she was past 22 when she was married. She was always a hale, hearty woman, and her family increased until after she was 45, and that he is now 66, this would give to the mother an age of 111, and I think that was really her correct age. Mrs. Kiger was full of recollections of very interesting events that happened in her youth. She had without doubt seen General Washington, and she died believing that she had performed a personal service for him. She was employed as a seamstress by a tailor, on the banks of the Potomac, at the time of the Whiskey Rebellion, aforesaid, when the principal officer in command of the troops ordered out to suppress that rebellion - as the troops were marched by the shop of the tailor - lost one of his suspender buttons and ran into the shop to have it sewed on - "Polly" was assigned to do the job, and as she plied her needle thereat, the officer chucked her under the chin and remarked, "this is a fine looking lass you have here!" Mrs. Kiger died in the belief that officer was none other than Washington himself. I have listened with deep interest to her account of this event, but as General Washington, I believe, was not present in person with the troops he ordered out to put down the Whiskey Rebellion, I have always supposed that she must have performed that little service for some less distinguished officer. Mrs. Kiger raised a large and respectable family. As I have already remarked, her youngest child is now a man of 66 years, while her oldest daughter, (Mrs. Murray), since the death of the mother, has become one of the oldest women in the county. I do not know her exact age, but think she must be over 85. Until shortly before her death Mrs. Kiger was hale and vigorous. It gives me pleasure to remember that, from early childhood, I was always a favorite with her. Not six months ago she secretly stole away from home (eight miles from Lancaster) and started off to make me a visit. She was overtaken by a grand-son, with a team, who kindly brought her to town, as she insisted on completing her contemplated journey. I returned her visit in a few days, and she made me another not two months ago. PEACE BE TO HER ASHES! J.D.M.
