Description	:	Mary "Polly" Williams was the daughter of Sarah "Sally" Lanier Williams (1748-1814) by Sally's first husband, Col Joseph Williams of "Nutbush" (1742-1773). Joseph was the son of Ursula Henderson and Daniel Williams (1710-1759), who had moved from Hanover Co, Virginia, to Granville Co, NC. Sarah Lanier was the daughter of Thomas Lanier of North Carolina. Her grave stone reads: "In memory of Mary, daughter of Joseph Williams, who was born 16th June, 1770 On 4th December, 1788, she was married to Matthew Clay On Sun. 22nd Nov. 1789, she was delivered of a Daughter named Sally On... It is told that Mrs. Clay's family were deeply hurt by the inscription which her husband had engraved on her tomb, and purposely drove their carriage across it breaking it in half. The halves, however, were set in place. Mrs Mary Clay died in 1798 and her rock walled tomb is all that marks the site of their home. Matthew Clay died in 1813, while on a return trip from Richmond and is buried in Halifax County, Virginia. There is a marriage record in Pittsylvania County VA of Mary Williams, daughter of Joseph Williams, marrying Matthew Clay 3 Dec 1788. There is a family tree on Ancestry.com listing her parents as Joseph Williams and Sarah Lanier. Mary's birth is listed as being 1770 and death as 1798.
