Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Scotia United Methodist Church in Scotia. The Rev. Melanie Adams will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery at Scotia. Mrs. Hermsmeyer was born Sept. 12, 1907, at the family farm house northeast of Kearney to Joseph and Jennie (McConnell) Duncan. She attended the Fairview rural school near her home through eighth grade, then attended high school in Poole and then Kearney. Normal training at Kearney High School prepared her as a teacher and she then taught in rural schools near her home the following six years. With correspondence courses, summer classes and terms spent at Kearney State College between teaching positions, she earned her bachelor degree in 1937. She then taught elementary grades in Elm Creek and Alliance. She married Irvin Hermsmeyer of Scotia on Aug. 20, 1941, at Wilcox. The couple lived on the Hermsmeyer farm east of Scotia, where she became a fulltime homemaker. Some years later she taught music at the Greeley Public Schools as well as some remedial work in subjects as needed. In 1984, the Hermsmeyers retired and moved into Scotia. She moved to Riverside Lodge in Grand Island in October 1997 and to Tiffany Square Care Center on March 29, 2000. Music was always of special interest to Gertrude. She first began playing the pump organ at the church at age 9. She played violin in the orchestra at Kearney State College. After her marriage she played the piano or organ for church services at the former Salem United Methodist Church, east of Scotia for 48 years. She was a member of the Scotia United Methodist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Savage of Grand Island and two grandsons. She was preceded in death by her husband on July 16, 2000, and by four brothers and four sisters.
