Marty Grant’s research states Mary Polly Grant’s maiden name may have been Morris, Bradley, or Dalton. (Marty Grant believes the strongest case was for Dalton; He was referenced as “Uncle William Grant” by John Dalton 1758-1838 in John’s military records—John said his birth record was kept by this uncle but was lost when Indians attacked the Grant Residence); some say Bradley —(he was listed as owing a debt on John Bradley’s Estate in Morgan District in NC but Marty notes this isn’t naming him as a heir but among individuals owing a debt). The argument for Morris is due to William Grant being granted custody of John Morris who died fighting in the Battle of King’s Mountain on the Tory side in 1780. ___________________________ Mary "Polly" Grant was born in Virginia in about 1725/35; this date is approximate based on her children’s birth years. She married William Grant in Virginia about 1755 (based on birth year of eldest child) she last appears on the US Census as head of household in 1800. So we know she survived her husband (she us also mentioned in his will) and she died after 1800. The last record I have found was the 1800 Census; if you have further info, please let me review it to consider an edit. Please do not add duplicate memorials rather than having me consider your information for edits. ——————- Based on if Morris is the correct surname, she would then be the daughter of Thomas Morris and Sarah Wales Morris. If Morris this is the correct surname, her father would be the Thomas Morris born in Shropshire, England in 1670 where he was christened on 13 Jun 1670. Thomas Morris was listed on the Virginia Census in 1723 living in Stafford County, VA as "Thos Morris." so it is possible that she was born there--this is not a for sure thing though; if you have other information or a correction, please use the edit button and I'll be happy to look over your information. ————————- She married William Grant, Sr. in VA in about 1755. it is possible she and William were living in Goochland or Louisa County Virginia before moving to Tryon County, NC before the Revolutionary War. Before February 24, 1772, William and Mary "Polly" Morris Grant had moved to Tryon County, NC. William received a land grant for 100 acres on the North side of Mountain Creek there for his service in the Revolutionary War (see William's Find a Grave Mememorial for info on his military service and land ownership to be added). One report said they moved to NC to escape the coming war in Virginia region as tensions were building up. The war did reach into Western NC though. Tryon County no longer exists as it was divided to make Rutherford County and Polk County, in NC. The part the Grants lived in is in present day Rutherford County. I am still working on this page but it will show two more land grants including Bills Creek. William was a Miller and a Farmer. He was one of the founding citizens of Rutherford County and worked as a ranger and in other official positions. He was a guardian for his brother-in-law's (John Morris's) children; John fought on the Loyalist side and was said to have died in the battle of King's Mountain. This is a work in progress, more to come...not, not linking her parents yet as the question of her surname hasn’t been fully resolved. I do not have her exact death date but she died in Rutherford County, NC but she survived her husband and was listed as head of household on 1800 Rutherford County, NC Census. If you have further documentation you would like to add, please let me know. I removed maiden name since various researchers believe it to be Morris, Dalton, or Bradley.
