Mary R. Carre, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Carre, was born on a farm near Somers, Wis., on August 11, 1863. On June 3, 1867, her parents, with the then four children in the family, left Somers by the overland route, with the fixed purpose in mind of securing a home in the far west, arriving at Beatrice on June 28.
A stop was made to visit with friends, with the result that a little later land was purchased in what is now known as Blakely township, and which has been the parental home ever since, where Mary died on May 16, 1920, at the age of 56 years, 9 months and 5 days.
Mary, being of an energetic and industrious disposition, and catching the spirit of the pioneer period, early in life made up her mind to meet her share of the responsibilities and to assist in every way she could in meeting the needs of the new home. Being fond of needlework she decided to become a dressmaker. To this end she came to Beatrice where she served an apprenticeship qualifying herself for this vocation and remaining right here she engaged in her chosen work as long as her condition of health would permit her doing so.
About August 1st last year when illness finally compelled her to give up her work, she was taken to a local hospital for treatment, remaining there until October 1, when she was removed to the old family home, where she received every care and comfort that loving hands could give her until death released her from all worldly care on the date above stated. Among the immediate members of the family, she leaves to mourn her departure her aged father, three sisters and two brothers, her mother having preceded her on June 4, 1912.
A number of years ago Mary united with the Centenary Methodist Episcopal church of Beatrice, where she continued her membership until the Lord called her to the Church Triumphant in Heaven.
Funeral services were held from the old family home, at two o'clock p. m. Tuesday, May 18, Rev. J. M. Darby having charge, and conducting a most appropriate service. A mixed quartet from the church furnishing most excellent music, some being favorite selections. The pallbearers were sons of the early pioneers, they having grown up as neighbors. They were Wm J Lamb, Albert Blakely, W. R. Langworthy, Horace Mann, L. O. Langworthy, and Arthur Bartlett.
Interment was made in the family lot in Evergreen Home cemetery, the remains being placed beside those of her mother.
