Read More	Mrs. Mary Riddle Burns, 91, of 517 Church St., Laurens, SC, loving wife of Byron Eugene "Gene" Burns, passed away December 1, 2011, at Hospice House of Laurens County. Born May 13, 1920, in Clinton, SC, she was a daughter of the late Fielding Luther Riddle and Ressa Ola Franks Riddle. She was graduated from Laurens High School where she led the girls' varsity basketball team to two state championships as their captain. After business school, she was the office manager and secretary to the president of the Laurens Hosiery Mill for five years. She "retired" to marry and be the help mate to the love of her life, "Gene", when he returned from World War II. Their 66 year love story has been a source of great inspiration to family and friends. Her full time job since their marriage in 1946 has been devoting all her love, time, and energy to being the best wife, mom, sister, mother-in-law, grandmom, and great grandmom ever! Evidence of her love of family will live on in many ways… especially through the beautiful needlework that she so lovingly created for all. In addition to her love for family, her love for her church at Laurens First Baptist and its people, especially its young people, was so deep. She served in many areas of church life from music committees to committees involving the seniors and children. Most especially, she was a charter member of her beloved Golden Circle Sunday School class where she led her class members in outreach and devotional times each Sunday for many years. Perhaps her greatest love and source of joy was with the children. She was Sunbeam and Vacation Bible School director for many years. She is remembered fondly by all as the "lady with the big smile and the pocketbook full of chewing gum". She was also dedicated to her "card ministry". She had a passion for sending cards to her family and friends filled with her own special written words of encouragement and cheer (and usually gum). Nothing put a bigger smile on her face, however, than talking about and being with her grandson Burns and great granddaughter Brooks Burns Wetmore. To them she is "Gran"! In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Susan Burns Wetmore and husband Frank of Greenville; a grandson, Burns Wetmore and wife Sarah of Charleston; a great granddaughter, Brooks Burns Wetmore of Charleston; a sister, Dorothy R. Cooper and husband Rudolph of Roebuck; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two older brothers and two older sisters. The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation for the attentive and loving care given by Dr. Mel Patterson and the Hospice of Laurens County. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 PM Sunday, December 4, 2011, at Forest Lawn Cemetery conducted by Dr. Bev T. Kennedy, Jr. and Rev. Phil Hall.
