Description	:	Mrs. Ruth Hanks Brown, age 98 of Elkin, widow of John Walter Brown, passed away Monday, November 05, 2018 at her home. Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Thursday, November 8, 2018 at Charity United Methodist Church in Austin with Pastor Cindy Furr officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately after the burial at the cemetery. Mrs. Brown was born January 14, 1920 in Wilkes County to Thomas Blaine Hanks and Roosevelt Phillips Hanks. Ruth was appointed as a member of the North Carolina State Executive Committee of the US Department of Agriculture-ASCS, was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution” DAR” and an official with the Board of Directors of Charity United Methodist Church where she was a member. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband John Walter Brown, three sisters; Hilda Hanks Wallo, Floramae Hanks Coe and Bessielee Hanks Burcham and a brother; Charles William Hanks who was killed in WWII. She is survived by two daughters; Betty R. Brown Satterlee of Elkin and Johnsie B. Brown and husband Joseph T. Brown, Jr. of Fripp Island, SC, two grandchildren; Carrie Brown Canfield and husband Bryan of Beaumont, TX and Joseph T. Brown III, MD and wife Shell of Kennesaw, GA and six great grandchildren; Caite Canfield, Ted L. Canfield II, Quincy Brown, Alden Brown, Rhys Brown and Knox Brown. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 688 North Bridge Street, Elkin, NC 28621 Photo is grave stone is shown on her husband's Memorial.
