I am sure all the Apperson children heard many stories about Boone and his travels. About 1807 Doctor Apperson, with his older brothers John, Peter and Francis Apperson, left North Carolina by wagon train for the West. A cousin, Turner Apperson, who lived near the old Apperson plantation near East Bend, NC, years later expressed his thoughts that they would have crossed the Great Smokies at Roaring Gap close by, traveling through present Asheville, NC., into Overton Co., TN, where we know they dropped off a runaway child they picked up, Obidiah Ray, at his Mother's home there. It may be that Eli Mitchell, father of Celia Mitchell Apperson, John's wife, - and Mary Ruth Mitchell - his future bride, was on the same wagon train. Mitchell settled on Kettle Creek in Overton Co. Mary Emma Lee Apperson Robbins, daughter of James Petty Apperson, a son of Peter, wrote on the flyleaf of her Bible "Peter Apperson emigrated to Kentucky." It is known they went first to Barren Co., Ky. In 1807 John Apperson patented land in nearby Cumberland Co. Both John and Francis Apperson's families were shown there on the US Census of 1810. It is thought that one of th young men living in John's home was Doctor Apperson. After a time John, Francis and Doctor Apperson went on Overton Co., TN., settling on Kettle Creek near Eli Mitchell. There Doctor Apperson married Mary Ruth Mitchell, called Polly, who was born in South Carolina July 1, 1794, a sister of John Apperson's wife, Celia, called Cely. James Milton Apperson, first child of Doctor and Polly, was born in Tennessee January 21, 1816. After a time all of the Appersons decided to return to Kentucky and settled in Monroe Co., which was formed out of Barren Co, Ky. Here all three Apperson families lived until 1819 at which time many settlers were pouring into Missouri. They located on land which they purchased in Cooper Co., near the small locality of Pisgah, Mo. Some of them were charter members of the Baptist Church of Pisgah. Some evidence was found indicating that Doctor Apperson was a Baptist lay-minister but none of his present day descendants had any knowledge of this. It is know they all were very active in that church, as well as other community and civic matter. Polly Apperson died near California, Mo., where Doctor later bought land and moved his family. Her gravestone shows the date of her death as July 8, 1854. Doctor died there December 11, 1865. They were both buried in what is now known as Old Cemetery at California, MO - it was Apperson Cemetery. Some interesting data on Doctor's family is contained in a letter of June 1848 to Peter Apperson in Texas from his daughter, Louisa Jane Apperson Ward, Springfield, Mo.,, where Doctor's son, James Milton then lived, which reads in part: "Uncle Doctor and Aunt Polly and Cousin Elizabeth have been out to Milton's for three or four weeks. he looks better than I have ever seen him. They said they left all the connections well but Cousin Bennett. They think he is mending a little and is in fine spirits and thinks he will get well. He can slide a chair over the house and walks after it." Information is that Bennett had malaria at which time quinine to treat it had not been discovered.
