Carpenter, 85 died at her home, 726 Sampson street, at 10 a.m. today after an illness with advanced age and complications. Mary S. DeVore was born Nov. 6, 1846, the daughter of William and Mary E. Massey DeVore. She was married to Ezra James Carpenter, who died Feb. 9, 1914. She had made her home here for 45 years and was a member of the United Brethren church. Surviving are five children, Mrs. Elizabeth Abbott, Muncie, Ind.; George Carpenter and William Carpenter, of Muscatine; Mrs. Clara Hammond, Columbus Junction; Mrs. Pearl McCormick, New Boston, Illinois; five brothers and sisters, Mrs. Sam Burke, Mrs. Catherine Onoch, Thomas B. DeVore, and Henry H. DeVore, Columbus Junction; William A. DeVore, Bettendorf. Funeral services will be conducted at the Fairbanks Home for Funerals Friday by the Rev. Ira Hawley, pastor of the United Brethren church. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery. "THE MUSCATINE JOURNAL," Muscatine, Iowa, April 1, 1932 Hawley Conducts Carpenter Rites Final rites for Mrs. Mary S. Carpenter, who died Wednesday at her home, 726 Sampson street, were conducted today at the Fairbanks Home for Funerals by the Rev. Ira B. Hawley, pastor of the United Brethren church. Burial was in Greenwood cemetery. Pallbearers were : O. Taylor, Frank Taylor, James Hammond, Clarence Carpenter, Gerald Bayer, and Ralph Powell. Flower attendants were Mrs. Mabel Lang, Mrs. Ella Law, Mrs.Ada Cracraft, and Mrs. Pearl Gonse. Mrs.Carpenter was survived by five children, 34 grandchildren, 65 great grandchildren,and two great great grandchildren, a total of 106 direct descendants.
