Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. MDT today at Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen. Mary was born Nov. 20, 1904, in Epiphany, S.D., the daughter of Andrew and Pauline (Weltz) Kallis. She was raised on a farm, and was educated by life experiences and schools at Bentley and New Leipzig. She moved to Beulah with her parents when she was 18. She was employed at the Zap Post Office until her marriage to Arthur (Art) Klaudt on June 24, 1928. She and Art were married at the German Beulah Baptist Church in Beulah. Following their marriage, they lived in Beulah, Zap and Hazen. Mary has been living during her later years with the Allen Family. Mary worked with her husband as an accountant and parts-person in their car and farm implement dealership, known as Klaudt Sales and Service in Hazen. After a fire in 1955, they rebuilt the business, which was later sold. However, Mary continued her involvement and support when Art continued to be active in the Mercer County politics and civic affairs, being a County Commissioner, Hazen City Commissioner as well as involvement in the Hazen Chamber of Commerce, and various civic and Hazen school activities. In 1975, they built and ran a laundromat. After Art's death in 1976, Mary ran the laundromat until she sold it in 1977. She was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church, Hazen. Mary will be remembered for her gracious hospitality. Her home was always open to relatives, friends, customers, strangers and a gathering place for her children's friends. Everyone who came to her home was always welcomed as a member of the family. She had a knack for feeding any unexpected quest who ever happened to come by at mealtime. Mary was loving, considerate, helpful yet, she was a very private and independent person. She looked on the positive side of life and never complained. She loved helping and serving others (in the true biblical definition of the term) out of the kindness of her heart, never performing an act of kindness in hope of receiving a reward in return. She always put others needs before her own. She treasured the many rich friendships she developed through her lifetime. Her sense of humor, laughter and kind gentle nature will be truly missed by all those who loved her and came in contact with her and knew her as Mary, Mom, Grandma or Friend. She loved to crochet, quilt and bake; was an excellent cook and seamstress. She enjoyed boating, fishing and playing cards. She is survived by one son, Elmer Klaudt, Spokane, Wash.; four daughters, Frances (Melvin) Gutknecht, Hazen, Evelyn (Roy) Hoeven-Arterburn, Fort Collins, Colo., Lois (Eugene) Launt, Hartsel, Colo., and Marion (Ado) Valge, Bowie, Md.; 16 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Lillie Ward, Carmichael, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Art; her brother, Bill; her sister, Magdalena; her son-in-law, James A. Hoeven Sr.; three grandchildren, James A. (Chip) Hoeven Jr., Gene Launt and Linda Valge; and two great-grandchildren, Lucy Durbin and Samantha Allen.
