Read More	Keokuk County News, Dec. 1923 Mary Shanhorst was born Dec. 3, 1830 in Hanover, Germany. She was the youngest of four children of the family of Christian and Dorotha Shanhorst. The family came to America in 1845 by the southern route, landing in New Orleans on New Years Day after a voyage of nine stormy weeks on the Atlantic. They proceeded at once to St. Louis where she remained for four years, coming to Iowa occasionally, to visit her parents, who had meanwhile located in Keokuk County. She often made the long trip over the sparsely settled prairie from Burlington to Sigourney on foot, there being no railroads or stage service in those early days. Here she met Louis Snakenberg, whom she married on May 24, 1848. Together they settled on the fanily home in a log house on the same farm where she lived at the time of her death. The home was blessed with 12 children. one dying in infancy, another, a son, being called in boyhood, and a third, losing his life tragically while still a young man. The remaining nine children, 8 sons and 1 daughter still survive. They are J. J. of Sigourney, Christian of near Keswick, Louis of Keister, Minnesota, Henry L. of Sigourney, Charles of Webster, Frank C. of Sigourney, Joe of Fairmount, North Dakota, Mrs. Ed Brannon of Sigourney, and Wm. F. residing on the home farm. Several years ago, Mrs. Snakenberg was one of the honored guests at the Snakenberg reunion which is still fresh in the nemory of many around Sigourney. An interesting fact brought out in a paper read at the reunion was that Mrs Snakenberg was the last surviving charter member of the Bethel M. E. Church, the oldest German M. E. church in Iowa. Feb. 23, 1904, her husband preceded her in death, and since that time she has lived in part at the old home with her son, William, but she frequently visited with her other children. Here, among her 27 grandchildren and a host of friends, she became known as Grandma Snakenberg, and by this name, she endeared herself to all who knew her. 1880 census, German Twp. Keokuk Co. Ia.
