Smith of the Ceylon Mission, and the daughter of E. Snell, Esq. formerly of Cummington, Mass. She was buried in Winchester, N.H. where they had found a home with their son-in-law, Rev E Harmon, since their return to this country in July last. She first entered the missionary service in ___ going to Madura as the wife of J. Steele, M.D. Mortuary Notice published Thursday, May 22, 1873 New Hampshire Sentinel, Keene, N.H.] Mary was closely related on her father's side to several eminent nineteenth-century New Englanders. Her first cousin (son of her father's sister, Sarah Snell) was the poet William Cullen Bryant, her father's brother, Dr. Thomas Snell (1774-1862), was a revered Congregational clergyman who held the same pastorate in Brookfield, Massachusetts for fifty years, and Thomas's son, Ebenezer Snell, Mary's first cousin, was the first graduate of Amherst College (1822). He became a well-known professor of mathematics and science at Amherst. Mary Snell met Dr. John Steele, a medical missionary, when she was working at a shop in Plainfield. Mary and husband Dr Steele left Boston on 23 November 1836 on the Saracen and landed in Madras in March 1837. Nothing is known of Mary Steele's missionary activities while with her husband Dr Steele in the late 1830s. When they were in Ceylon, Dr. Steele suffered a protracted illness and died in October 1842; met widowed Rev. John C Smith 1843; went with him to Varany in March 1844, where her first child Thomas was born; moved to Panditeripo in May 1845; five children were born while stationed at Panditeripo; departed from Ceylon in late 1856 to the USA where the traveled widely visiting relatives between May 1857 and October 1860 including Rev. Smith's brother Rev. Asa B Smith of Buckland, Mass. who was also a missionary; at the end of October 1860 John and Mary embarked in Boston for Ceylon aboard the Sea King, they arranged placements for their five oldest children whom they left behind in America; surviving "three gales and a hurricane", they and their youngest daughter Mary arrived in India on March 11, 1861; Smith Family Papers at Yale Divinity School records Smith's labors on behalf of the missionary cause in Ceylon between 1861 and 1865 and include letters Mary wrote to her children; Mary, their youngest daughter, left Ceylon in January, 1865 at the age of twelve, to live in the States; daughter Laura came to Ceylon in 1870 and due to her health, the family left Ceylon on the S. S. Stevenson in March 1872, Laura died at sea; Mary and her husband lived in Winchester, N.H. after that' Mary Snell Smith died of pneumonia in 1873 in Rocky Hill, Connecticut.
