MARY SHULL, MISSIONARY, DIES ON FIELD IN INDIA / Pneumonia Cause; Third Death Among Eight Sent Out by Orange Church. Mary Speicher Shull, 41, missionary to India died last Thursday at her summer camp in the Himalaya mountains and was buried Saturday, according to a cablegram to her mother, Mrs. P. J. Blough, Orange Center. Death was caused by pneumonia. She was the wife of Chalmer Shull. A letter received last week, which was a month in transit, said she was well and looking forward to returning to her missionary headquarters on the plains at Dahanu, Thana district, which is not far from Bombay. Third Death in Group. The death of Mrs. Shull in her young womanhood is the third among a group of eight missionaries who went to foreign fields from the South Waterloo Church of the Brethren in the last 25 years. Most of them went out in 1919. No other rural church in America has sent so many young people away to spread the gospel in alien lands. Very few city churches can match the record in so short a time. All the missionaries, both men and women, were college graduates. Nearly all were natives of Orange township, where they spent their childhood and young manhood and womanhood. Step-Sister Died in India. The others who gave their lives in spreading the gospel were Mrs. Jennie Blough Miller, step-sister of Mrs. Shull, who died in Umalia, India, three years ago, and Miss Anna Blough, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. U. S. Blough, who died in China six yeas ago. Mr. and Mrs. Shull and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur S. B. Miller and the latters' infant daughter, Marjorie, left the P. J. Blough home in 1919 for their fields abroad. "It left a terrible gap in our home," said Mr. and Mrs. Blough Saturday. Attended School Together. "Mrs. Shull was my only child, her father having died when she was 8 years old," said Mrs. Blough. "Jennie was Mr. Blough's only child. They were of the same age. They attended Sunday school, church and day school together. They graduated together from high school. They finished college together, were married only six months apart and went out to the foreign mission field togheter. Now both are dead." Mr and Mrs. Blough had difficulty in stifling their emotions as they talked about the tragedy that has come to the two young couples. Born Near Dunkerton. Mary Speicher, only daughter of J. B. and Amanda (Lichty) Speicher, was born Sept. 27, 1893, on a farm near Dunkerton, Ia. On Dec. 25, 1917, she was married to Chalmer Shull. Two years later they sailed for India. With them sailed Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Miller. Surviving are the husband, two children, Loretta, 12, and Gordon, 10; her mother, step-father and two step-brothers, Dorsey Blough on the home farm in Orange and Homer Blough, pastor of the Church of he Brethren at Clear Lake, Ia. Charles Bonsack, Elgin, Ill., secretary of the missionary board; J. K. Miller, Cedar Rapids, layman, and Leland Brubaker, Covina, Cal., layman, who returned two weeks ago from an 11-month tour of all missionary fields of this denomination, visited in the Shull home when in India. Furlough Planned Next June. The Shulls planned to come home on their furlough next June. Miss Eliza Miller was the first missionary to be sent by the South Waterloo church. That was about 25 years ago. She is still in India. Then followed Dan J. Lichty, Miss Sadie Miller and Miss Anna Blough. Then followed four more, Mr. and Mrs. Shull and Mr. and Mrs. Miller.
