She became the Olympic Peninsula’s first Life Master when she reached 300 points in 1965, and progressed through the levels of Bronze Life Master (500 masterpoints), Silver Life Master (1,500 masterpoints) and now Gold Life Master." Born Feb 25 1918 to Caroline Sofie Caldwell & CWO John Hopkins Caldwell in Port Townsend WA. at Fort Worden hospital. She graduated high scholl in Schenectady, NY. She then attended Spencer Business College, also in Schenectady, graduating two years later. Mary lived most of her life in Port Townsend, but because her father was active military in the Army, she attended various schools in various states, which at time included the territory of Hawaii. After her father's death in 1940, Mary returned to Port Townsend and remained for the rest of her life. In 1942, she married Duane M. Cheney and in 1943 welcomed John Michael Cheney to the world. In 1951 she married her husband of 61 years, Frank H. Norwood, who passed in 2012. Mary worked for the Sixth Engineers during the war years and later worked at Fort Worden in the Fiscal Department. She worked for Cotton Engineering as a payroll clerk and was later promoted to office manager until the company's close. While working for Cotton's, she was also elected to the City Council and served one term. She was later elected and re-elected to serve as Jefferson County Clerk, from which she retired in 1980. After this occurred, the Mayor of the time, Barney McClure, resigned and the City Council voted 5-1 to appoint Mary Norwood as interim Mayor, to which her response as called upon, but would not seek re-election. She enjoyed golf & duplicate bridge. She was most proud of here accomplishment as the first person in the 443 Unit of the American Contract Bridge League to earn the status of Life Master. Mary was preceded in death by her husband Frank Norwood, her son John Cheney, and her brother Jim Caldwell. She is survived by her brother Jack Caldwell; sister-in-laws Rose Caldwell; Betty Caldwell, and Jo Norwood; step-daughters Sharon Miller; Diane Thrasher and Joni Faris. Both brothers had very large families, thus she is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, and nephews. Through her step daughters she is additionally survived by 8 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the scholarship fund of the Jim Caldwell Memorial Rhody Golf Tourney, 906 Madison St, Port Townsend, Wa. 98368. Services will be held at Saint Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Port Townsend on October 3, 2015. Rosary at 12:30, Mass at 1 pm. Reception to follow in the adjacent social hall." From 1940 to 1945, Cheney served as a sergeant in the 283rd Coast Artillery, U.S. Army. Duane lived in Nevada for 16 years. He was employed as a cleaning supervisor in Harrah's Club, Lake Tahoe. Frank Norwood had be previously married to Lois Hawley. The children of Frank Norwood and Lois Hawley were: 1. Sharon Norwood (Miller) 2. Diane Norwood (Thrasher) 3.
