Bates, Sr at Guthrie Center, Aug 9th, 1927 being 80 years, 3 months, and 29 days old. She was the daughter of Martin and Ellen Torpy, the second of four children, all having preceded her to the spirit land but one sister, Mrs Margaret Steel, who lives near Des Moines. On April 23rd, 1864, she was united in marriage to William Murphy, who passed away April 23rd, 21 years ago on their 42nd anniversary. To this union were born 12 children 6 boys and 6 girls. Four children, Ellen, Kathryn, Lola Bell, and James R passed on before. There is left to mourn her death: J.T. Murphy of Bayard, Iowa; Mrs D.R. Bates, Sr, Martin J, William F, and John all of Guthrie Center, Iowa; Elizabeth Farr of Portland, Oregon; Charles of Oklahoma City, OK; Mary A Blomquist of Perry, IA; 24 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren. She and her husband and eldest son came to this country in 1866 and settled on a farm in Dallas county, where they remained for a number of years, moving from there to Guthrie county, where they lived for few years, when they moved to Sacramento, CA. After staying there a short time they returned to Oklahoma City. After residing in that place for 7 years they made a trip to Alberta, Canada. She remained there until after the death of her husband, when she returned to Guthrie county, where she has since lived. Mrs Murphy had been sick for 8 weeks, at time suffering a great deal, but she bore her suffering with great patience, always cheerful. A short service was held at home, after which the remains were taken to the Catholic church, where the funeral services were held. She was laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery at Bayard. Her six grandsons acted a pall bearers: Dan Bates, Sr, Estel Murphy, Otto Murphy, Cecil Murphy, James Murphy, and Richard Daugherty.
