Description	:	Mary Ward Porter was born on November 19, 1814 in Cincinnatti, Ohio and was married to Stephen W. Porter, at the age of 20. In 1835, they moved to Mason County, Illinois and endured many of the hardships of early settlers. They lived 16 miles from the nearest town. To this union, seven children were born: Richard D, Lewis, Charles Henry, Elvira Jane, Edith, William T, and John. During the Civil War, Stephen and three of their sons enlisted in the service, serving in Co. F, 19th Illinois Infantry. One son, Lewis, did not return... Read More	Mary Ward Porter was born on November 19, 1814 in Cincinnatti, Ohio and was married to Stephen W. Porter, at the age of 20. In 1877, the family moved to Merrick County, Nebraska. In May of 1882, Stephen W. passed away and 10 years later, the wife of son, William, passed away, leaving six children, all under the age of 10. Mary Porter took charge of and raised these children, of her own free will. She was a member of the Methodist Church, and lived to the age of 101. Even at an advanced age, it was noted that Mary had an active mind and body. She never avoided work or hardship and was devoted her life to the duties of motherhood.
