They were the parents of Hazel and Earl. Aug 21, 1899 - Carroll Sentinel - Mrs. John Crackling had a narrow escape from death by drowning while at Ripley's attending the Woodmen picnic. She was bathing and got beyond her depth, when as she was sinking for the last time, Mr. Sherer of Glidden rescued her. March 12, 1938 - Carroll Daily - Mrs. John Crackling, 73, a resident of Carroll for forty-seven years, died at 10:45 Saturday morning at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Dr. and Mrs. W.M. Shirley, 726 North Adams Street. Mrs. Crackling had been in poor health for a long time. The immediate cause of her death was anuria, with which she had been critically ill only since Friday morning. The body will be removed at 10:30 Sunday morning from the Huffman Funeral home, where it will rest until the funeral services. Rites will be held at the Dr. Shirley residence at 2:10 Monday afternoon with the Rev. Claude R. Cook, minister of the Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Carroll Cemetery. Mrs. Crackling would have been seventy-four years old on April 11. She was born Mazie Shoemaker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Shoemaker in Cologne, Germany on April 11, 1864. In 1880 she came to the United States with her parents, who settled at Newark, N.J. After living there a few years they pioneered to McCook, Neb., where they were living when she became the bride of John Crackling in 1887. Mr. and Mrs. Crackling lived in McCook for several years and in Omaha for a short, time before coining to Carroll forty-seven years ago. They have made their home here since then. Survivors include her husband, her daughter, Mrs. W.M. Shirley (Hazel), of Carroll, one son, Earl Crackling, of Sioux City, and two sisters living in the West. Mrs. Crackling belonged to the Methodist Church of which she was a member for many years. As long as her health permitted she was active in church work. In point of years of membership, she was the oldest member of the Woman's Home Missionary Society, which she joined in 1894. She also belonged to the Industrial Society of the church. Mrs. Crackling was a member of Wild Rose Camp, Royal Neighbors of America.
