She was the oldest resident of this community, except one, Mrs. Hannah Armstrong. She was. a daughter of Jared and Martha Wilson Armstrong and the last remaining one of a family of seven children, as follows: Mrs. Elizabeth Wilson, Mrs. Jane Jones, Mrs. Victoria Jones, Miss Martha Armstrong, (who died in girlhood) Alfred Armstrong and Mrs. Madison Karicofe. She was married in the fifties to Josiah Armstrong, who was a brave Confederate soldier, and died in Elmira N.Y., in the fall of 1864. She was thus early left with the care of five small boys and a niece who was left an orphan in by the small pox scourge in 1862. No one but herself knew the hard ships she endured, but being a woman of indomitable courage and energy and of a hopeful, happy and persevering disposition, she was able to surmount all difficulties and trained her sons for useful citizens, the oldest, Alfred 0., being a minister of the Baltimore Conference for a number of years, but called from labor to reward about twenty years ago. The other surviving sons are John., Emmerson W., Howard W. and Josiah II., all of whom were with her in her last illness, and tenderly ministered to her every want. We would not forget to mention the untiring faithfulness and devotion of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Josiah Armstrong, reminding us of Ruth of old, for she never left her but for a short time and in recent years was constantly with her, giving up everything to minister to her every need. Such devotion is not often seen in a daughter. "Aunt Celia" as she was familiarly called by every one who knew her, was a truly wonderful woman, very original, intellectual and possessing a remarkable memory. It was a pleasure to sit at her feet and hear her tell of by-gone days. She was converted in girlhood and united with the M.E. Church South, lived the life of a true christian and died a triumphant death. She enjoyed the association of friends, and by her cheerful disposition and kindness of heart, won all with whom she came in contact. She will be greatly missed by a host of friends more especially by the immediate family. Although we mourn her departure, we are comforted by the thought that "our loss is her gain". Funeral services were conducted March 28th in the Doe Hill church by Revs. Wendall Allen, Lyle Moffett and J.C. Thrasher, the latter preaching from the text "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints," Psalms 116: 15, after which her remains were interred in the adjacent cemetery. The large concourse of people in attendance attested the esteem in which she was held, John Mohler and family attended the funeral and a number of people from Monterey & McDowell.
