He died Sunday morning, Mar. 28, after an illness of one week with pneumonia. He had been having a hard cold for about two weeks, when suddenly be took a chill; Dr. Kendrick was called and did what he could but all of no avail, also Dr. Longe of Newport was called in consultation. Mr. Wood was born in Greensboro 71 years ago and lived there until about 17 years ago when he went to Stanstead and lived there for about seven years, when he bought a farm here [Derby] on which he has lived 14 years last November. He was educated in Greensboro until he was 14 years old when he met with an accident which caused him to be lame the rest of his life; afterwards he attended the Orleans Institute, where he finished his education. He made farming his occupation. He leaves to mourn his loss a widow and eight children: George Wood, Mrs. Emma Kneeland, Mrs. Myrtie Carr of Waterbury, Dennis Wood of Derby, Carl Wood of Pawtucket, R. I., Mrs. Mary Driver of New York city, Mrs. Hattie Brock of Stanstead, Can.; also 13 grandchildren. The four sons and one daughter, Mrs. Hattie Brock, attended the funeral; the other three daughters were unable to come. Sixteen members of the Navy grange from West Charleston, of which he was a member, attended in a body. They remembered him during his sickness with fruit and flowers. It was the first time death had entered their order. The funeral services were held at the house Tuesday at 12 o'clock, Rev. Mr. Dixon, chaplain of the grange, officiating, assisted by Rev. Mr. Hurd. The body was placed in the tomb awaiting removal to Glover for burial. Among the flowers were a bouquet of roses from the wife, pillow from children present, carnations from daughter in New York, pillow from the grange, a spray of roses from the business men of Derby. Mathewson J. Wood was the son of John Wood of Greensboro. There were eight children, those who survive him are Mrs. Ellen Davison of Barre, George Wood of Greensboro, Mrs. Matilda Hanson of Glover. He finished his education at Glover institute. He leaves many dear ones to mourn his loss." (Orleans County Monitor, 6/2/1909)
