DROSTE Martin (actual spelling) Droste was born in Frede, Munster Province Germany on January 20, 1835. He came to America as a young man and lived in Lexington. He enlisted in Co. DROSTE Martin (actual spelling) Droste was born in Frede, Munster Province Germany on January 20, 1835. He came to America as a young man and lived in Lexington. He enlisted in Co. "L" 2nd Regiment of the Kentucky Volunteer Calvary on Oct. 21st, 1861. After a second enlistment on February 7, 1864 he was discharged from the Union Army July 17, 1865. His Civil War records show that his occupation was farming. He was married on October 9, 1866 to Anna Wesler in St. Francis Seraph Church at Cincinnati, Ohio. To this union nine children were born: Ben, Harry, Mary Heeke, Katherine Lampe, Elizabeth and Emma Hornung, Frances Schulte and Carrie Wiehebrink. They all lived in the Windthorst, Spearville and Dodge City communities all their lives. One child, Anna, died in infancy. According to the Diamond Jubilee history of the Windthorst parish by Father Joe Stremel, Martin Droste who came to Larned in the fall of 1877 to complete the transaction with the Santa Fe railroad to locate the Windthorst settlement. He with his wife and three small children came to Kansas and settled on the quarter south of the Fred Torline home. He homesteaded this quarter and planted 10 acres of trees on the quarter directly south of Bill Naabs to lay claim to that land. The hardships of drought, hail and snow storms, and grasshoppers plagued their early day existence to try to make a living in their new found homes on the frontier. The snow storm of 1886 nearly wiped out his small cattle herd. Adding to their problems were Indian scares and prairie fires that made life truly a hardship. Their faith in God and their newly adopted country, for which he had fought, did eventually bring blessings to him and his family. His grandchildren are reaping the benefits they and the early pioneers sacrificed to make possible in Western Kansas today. The couple celebrated their Golden Wedding with a big community dinner and dance on October 9, 1916. Martin Droste's death occurred on March 23, 1918, and his wife died on October 18, 1923. Both are buried at the Windthorst Cemetery.
