SMITH Mathias Jepson Smith, generally known as Chris Smith, died Tuesday morning of a heart affection, after four hours of illness. At two o'clock he called his son, Nelson, who at once went to his father's rooms and found him suffering from pain in the chest. After an hour, Mr. Smith felt comfortable and sent his son home. At five o'clock, he phoned his son in law, E D. Hartley, that he was ill and the latter at once drove his automobile to Mr. Smith's rooms and took him back to the Hartley home. The doctor arrived and began his examination when death came Mr. Smith was a native of Denmark, coming to this counry in 1865, when about 18 years old and lived in Illinois for two years. Since 1867, he has been a resident of Madison county, his first employer being William Early of Penn townshisp. After living for ten or twelve years on his own farm in Douglas, Mr. Smith was the manager of the Mills farm at Tileville. Twenty three years ago, he moved to Winterset, where he lived until his death. He leaves four children by his first marriage: Mmes Hartley and Bass of Winterset, Nelson of Winterset and William of Cannon Diablo, Arizona; by his second marriage, a daughter, Mrs. Jay Danforth of Denver. Her mother, Dr. Jessie V. Smith, died two years ago. Mr. Smith was a man of strong personality to whom the word "genuine" was most applicable. His sons found in him an elder brother and companion, quick and ready in sympathy, his daughters looked to him for tenderness and kindly advice. The community knew him as a man of sterling worth, a highly respected citizen, whose going will cause him to be greatly missed.
