Harmsen, passed away Wednesday, January 6, 1971 at the Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan where she had been a patient since December 11th. Harmsen, passed away Wednesday, January 6, 1971 at the Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan where she had been a patient since December 11th. Mrs. Harmsen had been in failing health many years and had resided at the Salem Invalid Home in Elk Horn the past eight years. Mathilda Dorothea Hanna Hansen was born February 29, 1884 on the Island of Fehmarn, Germany, to Georg and Emilie (Topp) Hansen and came to the United States in 1892, locating in Iowa. She was married to John C. Harmsen at Avoca on January 25, 1905. They lived in the Walnut and Hancock areas until his death on April 22, 1955. She lived in Atlantic until moving to the Home in Elk Horn. She was bapitized in the German Lutheran faith. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Lawrence (Ella) Andersen of Harlan, Mrs. Rosie Christensen of Atlantic and Mrs. Harlow (Lillie) Butcher of Norfolk, NE; two sons, Martin of Atlantic and Herman of Harlan; two sisters, Mrs. Kay Neibuhr of Davenport and Mrs. Anna Finnell of Albany, OR; two brothers, George Hansen of Davenport and Hugo Hansen of Glasgow, MT; 45 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, two sons, Emiel and Lawrence Harmsen, five brothers and four sisters. Funeral services were held Saturday, January 9th, at 1:30 p.m., at Roland's Funeral Home in Atlantic. The Rev. Axel Andersen of Elk Horn officiated. Burial was in the Walnut Cemetery.
