Description	:	Mathilda Johnson, 95, of Le Mars, passed away Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 24, 2011 at St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. with Reverend Greg Gabriel officiating. Interment will be at St. John Lutheran Cemetery, Craig, Iowa. Visitations will be after 5:00 p.m. Friday, December 23, 2011 at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars followed by a 7:00 p.m. Prayer Service at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Michael Popken, Marc Anfinson, Roger Wenzel, Jacob Popken, Joseph Popken, and Austin Anfinson. Mathilda K. Popken was born January 19, 1916 on the family farm east of Craig, Iowa to John G. and Katherine (Janssen) Popken. Mathilda was baptized and confirmed at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Craig, Iowa. She attended country school near her home. Mathilda was united in marriage to Harry L. Johnson on November 17, 1937 at St. John Lutheran in Craig. Mathilda and Harry farmed near Craig until moving to Fort Dodge, Iowa in 1957. Mathilda worked as a clerk for the city of Fort Dodge until retirement. In the early 1991, Mathilda was diagnosed with macular degenerative eye disease. Harry passed away in January of 1993 and she moved to Le Mars in February to be closer to her daughter, Ardis. As her vision deteriorated, Mathilda always kept her sense of humor nor let it slow her down. She enjoyed attending church and socializing. Years earlier, she enjoyed going fishing with family and friends and crocheting for the gift shop at Floyd Valley Hospital. She and Harry enjoyed traveling to Colorado to visit their sons regularly during their retirement years. In April of 2010, she moved to Park Place where she enjoyed the people and activities. Survivors include her 3 children: Ardis Popken and her husband Romain of Hinton, Oliver Johnson and his wife Bethel of Aurora, Colorado, and Loren Johnson and his wife Dorothy of Greeley, Colorado; 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, John G. and Katherine (Janssen) Popken; 3 sisters, Amanda Oltmanns, Esther Janssen, and Norma Popken.
