She married Matt Manternach on Jan. 17, 1940, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Sand Springs; he died in April 1982. She received her education in the rural country schools in the Sand Springs area and at the former St. Mary's School, Cascade. She was a member of St. Matthias Parish, Cascade. Tillie loved gardening, especially in her flower gardens and enjoyed playing the piano, sewing and crocheting. Surviving are five children, Irvin Manternach, of Dubuque; Janaan "Jan" (Dave) Funke, of Dyersville, Judy Putz, of Glenview, Ill., Carlyn (Jim) Sellner, of Earlville, and Sharon Manternach, of Apple River; 16 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; three brothers, Harold (Gladys) Faber, of Cascade, Nick Faber, of Dyersville, and Ed Faber, of Monticello; and a brother-in-law, Kenneth Rahe, of Washington. She also was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; three sisters; a granddaughter, Janita Sellner, on Nov. 25, 1990. A Matilda M. Manternach Memorial Fund has been established.
