Mathis "Matt" John Asche was born June 18, 1943, in Columbus, Nebraska, to Gilbert and Rose (Kaufman) Asche. Matt was a great-great grandson of Henry Lusche one of the founding fathers of Columbus. Matt received his early childhood education in Columbus and graduated from Columbus High School. He went on to the Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, Missouri, and the Lincoln School of Commerce in Lincoln, Nebraska. Matt worked for his father at the hardware store – Kaufman Hardware – throughout high school and after college. On December 4, 1964, Matt was united in marriage to Darlene Soukup in Glenwood, Iowa. Matt ran Kaufman Annex which was a toy store and mower repair shop. The two stores later joined into one store and in 1974, Matt purchased the business from his mother. Matt opened Kaufman True Value Home Center in 1981 (located on Howard Boulevard) and sold the business in 1995. He then went to work for the John Day Company and the Columbus Public Library, retiring in 2010. Matt served as the President of the Columbus Downtown Business Association, was affiliated with Cotter & Company (a True Value affiliation), and a member of the National Hardware Association. He was a lifetime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Matt enjoyed fishing trips with his family, going on cruises, was an avid reader, enjoyed dancing, and spending time with his family and friends. He never took a vacation without his family and loved to go see his grandchildren in sports and school activities. Matt is survived by: Wife – Darlene Asche of Columbus, NE Son – Glenn (Renee) Asche of Omaha, NE Grandsons – Alex and Evan Asche Son – David (Stephani) Asche of Suwanee, GA Son – Mathew (Renee) Asche of David City, NE Matt was preceded in death by: Parents – Gilbert & Rose Asche Infant Brother – John Asche In-laws – Albin Soukup and Sophie Soukup Zimmerman Step father-in-law – Albin Zimmerman
