Description	:	Matilda O'Neil Smith was born in Ross county, Ohio, November 27, 1837, and departed this life to be with Jesus, March 29, 1907, at the age of 70 years, 4 months and 2 days. At the age of 7 years, she, with her parents, came to Allen county, where she lived a life of love and usefulness, until called to her eternal reward. Read More	Matilda O'Neil Smith was born in Ross county, Ohio, November 27, 1837, and departed this life to be with Jesus, March 29, 1907, at the age of 70 years, 4 months and 2 days. At the age of 7 years, she, with her parents, came to Allen county, where she lived a life of love and usefulness, until called to her eternal reward. On May 7, 1857, she was united in marriage to Abraham Smith. To this union were born 8 children, 5 sons and 3 daughters. Of this family, one daughter died in infancy. In 1888, Rosa Smith Grafton passed to her eternal reward. August 26, 1902, the husband was called to his eternal rest. Since this time, Sister Smith has lived in widowhood. In her late affliction which was cancer of the stomach, she was very patient, never complaining, but with Christian fortitude patiently and lovingly waited for the end. Her's was a noble life and character, with complete faith in Christ. She bravely fought the battles of life, always having a good word for all and persistently refrained from saying anything wrong or talking about others. Indeed, this is a noble trait of character. Many years ago she found peace with Christ and united with the M.P. Church at Westminster, of which she was an honored member, always taking great delight in attending all the services when able. The church loses a consistent member, the community an earnest, upright citizen. The children a good mother. As a devoted wife she often spoke of her loneliness since the death of her husband and longed for the reunion. She would say, "If I could be with pa, how happy I would be. I would never get lonely or tired of his company. We never know until they are gone how much we miss them. My children are good and kind to me, but there is a vacant place in my heart." She leaves to mourn her departure five sons, one daughter, ten grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, besides a large circle of relatives and friends. Sister Smith's father's family consisted of ten children, all of whom are deceased, excepting one sister, Mrs. Mannahan of Harrod. With but one exception, the children were all with her in her last moments on earth, and burial, the absent one, William, of Dexter, Iowa, who on account of afflictions in his home, was not permitted to be present.
