Description	:	Mrs. Matilda Wells Gammon, 105, went to be with her Lord at the home of her son James Lester Gammon of Route 2, Callands, VA. She was the oldest resident of Pittsylvania County, VA. She was admitted to Memorial Hospital in Danville, VA on January 26 for treatment and a minor operation and returned home on February 22. It was the first time she had ever been in a hospital either as a patient or a visitor. Read More	Mrs. Matilda Wells Gammon, 105, went to be with her Lord at the home of her son James Lester Gammon of Route 2, Callands, VA. She was the oldest resident of Pittsylvania County, VA. She was admitted to Memorial Hospital in Danville, VA on January 26 for treatment and a minor operation and returned home on February 22. It was the first time she had ever been in a hospital either as a patient or a visitor. She was featured in the Journal of Living magazine about 18 months ago shortly before her 104th birthday, as an example of researchers' findings that hard work apparently is the best prescription for long life. Ironically, death came the same night she was honored by the Callands High School Beta club earlier in a dramatization. She was the oldest member of Liberty Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late John Dabney Wells and Mary Frances Bernard Wells. Her husband Joel Henry Gammon died in 1937. Two sisters and two brothers also predeceased her. In addition to James Lester Gammon, she is survived by the following sons and daughters: Joel Henry Gammon, Jr of Route 4, Chatham, Va, Walter Ashby Gammon and Charles Lee Gammon, both of Route 4, Danville, Mrs. J L Allen of LaCrosse and O C Edwards of Route 1, Danville. There are at least 134 other descendants. Funeral services were conducted at Liberty Baptist Church. Interment was in the Church cemetery. Scott Funeral Home in Chatham served the family.
