Three days later, on September 15, she was baptized in the faith of the Evangelical Lutheran church of Bagband by Rev. Meintz, by whom she was also instructed and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in 1852 at Bagband. Read More	Sterling Sun (Sterling, NE), Thursday, May 21, 1931; pg. 5 OLD SETTLER PASSES AWAY Mrs. Matje Gerdes, nee Schoen, was born at Bagband, Germany, September 12, 1837. Three days later, on September 15, she was baptized in the faith of the Evangelical Lutheran church of Bagband by Rev. Meintz, by whom she was also instructed and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in 1852 at Bagband. On November 11, 1859, at the latter place and by the same pastor, she was married to her first husband, Fokke Ross. Three children, two sons and one daughter, were born to this union. In March 1872, by the death of her husband, she became a widow. Eight years later, she came to America with her children and located at Mt. Olive, Illinois. In the fall of 1881 she came to Nebraska and located west of Sterling. In 1886 she applied for a homestead in Sherman county, Kansas, locating there until in the autumn of 1888. Many pioneer hardships were encountered in those years which can only be truly realized through actual experience. In the spring of 1889 the deceased was united in marriage to Henry Gerdes of Crab Orchard, with whom she lived on a farm three miles north of Crab Orchard, Nebraska. In 1913 she again became a widow by the death of her husband. Five years ago, Mrs. Gerdes came to Sterling to live with her children. During the past three years she has been confined to her bed. She was patient in bearing the cross of her sufferings, commended her loved ones to God and her soul to her Savior, and died a Christian death on Thursday, May 14, 1931 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H.F. Rathe, where tender care had been administered throughout the past year. She attained the age of 93 years, 8 months and 2 days. Her loss is mourned by her three children, eight step-children, 21 grandchildren, 48 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
