Description	:	Westphalia Newspaper July 21, 1910: " Matthew Agnew died and his funeral was held Tuesday at St. Teresa Catholic church, one of the largest funerals ever held here. The church was filled to utmost capacity. William Agnew, S.J. of St.Louis, son of the deceased, was sub-deacon at the Requiem High Mass. Mr Agnew was born in Ireland in 1837 and came to America in 1853. After a stay of three years in West Virginia he came to Kansas and settled at Mineral Point, where he homesteaded a tract of land of which he was the owner until his death. ... The church was filled to utmost capacity. William Agnew, S.J. of St.Louis, son of the deceased, was sub-deacon at the Requiem High Mass. Mr Agnew was born in Ireland in 1837 and came to America in 1853. In 1867 he married Bridget McManus. They were blessed with nine children, 6 boys and 3 girls all living but one boy (Matthew) who died in February 1905 at age 25. His son William joined the Jesuit order of the priesthood. Five of his children are married, His children are James, John, Arthur, Patrick, Mamie Hatten, and Kate Shaughnessy of Westphalia, William of St.Louis and Teresa Jones of Lawton OK. He died July 18. During the Civil war he was at his post fighting for the country. He discontinued farming and with his wife moved to Westphalia to retire. The last two years he was failing in health and a year ago was stricken with paralysis, rendering him speechless and helpless.
